Were the EK Rumors Fake News?

Image
Today Bobby Mac went on Ottawa radio to confirm that the Erik Karlsson rumors were indeed factual, calling those who says it was fabricated "the biggest dumbass without an ounce of sense". SHOTS FIRED BY BOBBY MAC! I haven't seen Bobby get this fired up since, ever.  Essentially the idea was that bell media created a story out of nothing for ratings on deadline day.   That theory makes no sense, and with everything going on in Ottawa this year EK was for sure on the table to be dealt.  The problem is that to deal a guy like Karlsson it takes a perfect deal.  It sounds like Vegas would have been a top contender, and who knows maybe he still ends up in Vegas, but for now a deal couldn't be done.   Hey Ottawa maybe take a lesson from the fans in Montreal, if there are rumors your star defense man is going to be dealt, IT'S PROBABLY TRUE. Sens fans might want to circle draft day on their calendars.

Woah woah now & Senators rink breakdown

Image
We have big time sucky pantsed for the last week or so. Couldnt even muster a win against the Florida Panthers. The Calder Line looks great, the Turris line looks like a pile of garbage featuring The Tenderness eating a chili cheese burrito. Time to get back in the win column or else the Rangers and Islanders are going to start passing us in the standings and we are going to get stuck playing the Harlem Globetrotters Penguins in the first round. Apparently Michalek and Cowen are nearing a return which is good because I can't wait to not see Eric "turnover machine" Gryba playing any more. Same goes for Chris "turnover rig" Phillips who I am still bitter about not trading 2 years ago. way to go GMBM we could have gotten a 2nd rd pick for him now we have a shitty $3mill defenceman. Spezza is not skating yet so thats not a good sign. I think we would see him at the soonest in the second round of the playoffs should we make is there. Unless Maclean is willing to put...

HOLY MOLIGINLA! What A Shit Storm Last Night Was

Image
One of the forensic doctors hired by Eugene Melnyk Busy day, busy day. Well The Penguins became the new Stanley Cup favourites last night, oh they already were? oh ok disregard then. Iginla is headed to Pittsburgh and snubs the Bruins, haha thats fantastic. Where will Iginla fit in on the Pens roster? Does he play with Crosby and Kunitz, or with Malkin and Neal? I dunno but I have my reservations about this deal.  Iginla's done well in his career despite never having a true numero uno center with the Flames. The reason? Iginla loves to carry the puck and create his own chances, a role usually played by a teams number one centerman ala Crsoby and Malkin. Unfortunately if Iginla plays that way in Pittsburgh it means he is keeping the puck off the stick of either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, 2 much more dangerous players than a 40 year old Iginla. So it will be interesting to see how this new look Pens team meshes together. Cause we all know besides that one goal Crosby h...

Ola me Sens fans. The Sabres are up next

Image
Good evening boys and girls, and by good evening I mean good morning because todays game...IS AN AFTERNOON AFFAIR!!! Today the Sens take on the Sabres in a game that most pundits assume will go to overtime seeing as how we are 1-2-4 in our last 7 games and have gone past regulation time in 7 of the last 12 games. Im assuming Lehner gets the start again since he seems to be a OT magnet and we need the points. Somehow the Senators currently find themselves in 5th place in the East and actually have the 4th best record in the conference (the southeast is a joke of a division). Today we play a very bad team in the sabres so hopefully we can pull out an elusive WIN! What with all the Turris and Smith goals weve been blessed with recently. BTW Zibanejad tied Karlsson for the team lead in goals (at 6) against the habs. Yes Karlsson who last played during the American Revolution. So the Sabres are a hilarious mess of cap troubles. They must be loving the amnesty buyouts they are allowed ...

Before the Puck Drop: Sens vs Pretty Phly for a White Guy Sports

Image
Today at noon the Sens go into Philadelphia where they hope to run into Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington to talk about AIDS. Ben Bishop will be back in goal until further notice or until Lehner poison's his oatmeal, which ever comes first. Lehner played really well against the Bruins but I'de like to see Bishop get back in the net. Remember, if Bishop plays 9 or more games of 30+ minutes this season he remains an RFA this summer. Meaning its easier to keep him or that his trade value will be  higher. Flyers have not at all met expectations so far this season, currently sitting outside of a playoff spot while the Binghamton Senators have been surprising alot of people by going 5-1-1 while missing Spezza and Karlsson.  Karlsson by the way still leads the Senators with 6 goals this season. Who's in second you ask? Why that would be Jim O'Brien. A guy who is a healthy scratch every few games. That stat should tell you exactly how the Senators have been winning of late....

Sens, Habs Comparison Guide: Recap

Image
Sens:  #11 Daniel Alfredsson fakes throwing his stick into the crowd during a Maple Leafs Game. And it was awesome. Habs:  #11 Saku Koviu Returns from battling cancer and returns to a mediocre career as a non french speaking Habs Captain. Sens:  Have a roster full of young players that just wooped your young rsoters but. Habs:  Have a roster full of young players who are nearly leading the team in points because the rest of the team sucks. Sens:  Original logo featured the flag of Canada with a backdrop of the Parliament buildings.  was a barber pole black and red jersey. Habs:  later stole that barber poll design with disastrous consequences. Sens:  Won Stanley Cups like 90 years ago. And then didn't exist for 80 years so it doesn't really count. Habs:  Won Stanley cups like 90 years ago, and then in nearly every decade after that except for the last 2 when the Sens also existed. Sens + Habs:  The Radek Bonk years *cold shiver...

Sens Recap: Oh No Andy!

Image
Woah now Monsieur Habs Fan, I havent gone anywhere. The Senators pushed thier winning streak to 3 games last night by beating the Rangers in a shootout. Jakob Silfverberg was easily the best player on the ice and seems to finally be comfortable playing at the NHL level. Other Sens rookie and occasional Iranian Mika Zibanejad scored the game tying goal on the powerplay in the 3rd. I thought he was mostly invisible for most of the night but nice to see him get a goal. Would just like to point out the embarassing powerplay unit the Sens were being forced to play on that goal due to injuries. We have Wiercoch and Gryba on the point with Zbad, Smith and Greening up front. thats a total of 130 career points between them. Not good. Most significantly during this game we lost the leagues best goaltender (so far) to injury. Anderson was taken down by Chris Kreider in the crease and left the game with a sprained ankle. Bishop finished the game and looked good despite allowing the only 2 go...

Happy Birthday Abe!

Image
The Prudential Center stands this afternoon Its Family Day today, a day to enjoy family time by staying home from work/school and watching the price is right together, AND AFTERNOON HOCKEY! Our Sens played the Devils today in what can only be described as "the greatest game of hockey ever played". After falling behind very early in the first period, Ben Bishop recomposed himself and played great. Meanwhile the Sens players decided to bore the Devils to sleep ala "Hypnosis" from Pokemon. It's super effective. Critical Hit. The Sens were snake bitten early hitting post after post but eventually El Capitano Alfredsson tied it up in the third period. Weird moment at the end of regulation as a scuffle broke out nothing out of the ordinary happens, not even a fight breaks out. BUT David Clarkson and Chris Neil get 10 minute misconduct penalties and miss the rest of the game. Also Clarkson got an extra 2, putting the sens on the powerplay. Weirdest friggen call...

Sens Recap: Good Greif

Image
Last night the Leafs shutout our Senators 3-0 in a foreshadowing of the rest of the season. No Spezza, no goals. No Karlsson, no goals. No Michalek, no goals. Anderson can play amazing hockey all season, like he did last night and still the senators arent going to win many games if they can't put the puck in the net. The senators had 3 players make their NHL debuts last night and it showed in the on ice product. Just so you can truly grasp the how inexperienced this team is take a look back at this stat from Silver Seven : "Of the 18 skaters Ottawa has playing (last night), seven of them are eligible for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. They are Silfverberg, Zibanejad, Da Costa, Dzirzinsky, Grant, Wiercoch and Gryba. Jim O'Brien misses the cut off by 3 due to playing 28 games last year." Also remember that Borowiecki who did not play is also eligible and that Benoit is not eligible because he's 29 years old despite the fact he had zero games experie...

We are fucked

Image
As my friend AngryHabsFan eluded to already, yesterday was the end of the world as we know it for Sens fans. Matt Cooke's skate caught Karlsson in the Achilles tendon last night on a scuffle in the corner. First off don't even think that this was Matt Cooke being a dirty player and that he did this on purpose. It was just one of those freak plays that happen. No timeline has been given yet for Karlsson's return but I think its safe to say that he won't be back this season. Hopefully he can return from this injury and still be a great player. We already have Michalek playing on robotic knees so hopefully EK can get a hold of Milo's doctor. Speaking of Michalek he also disappeared before the game last night with a mysterious undisclosed injury. No word on what exactly is the extent of his injury yet. So without Spezza, Michalek, Karlsson and Jared Cowen I think its safe to say we are fucked and need to focus on shipping out Gonchar at the deadline and going ...

Before the Puck Drop: Sens @ Pens

Image
For the secondt time this season the Senators will get a look at Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. This is the second game of a back to back tonight after a 2-0 win over the Sabres last night. Anderson posted the shutout and it looks like he will get the start again tonight. The Penguins have playeed most of their game son the road but so far this year they are less than stellar at home. Which is good for the Senators. The Penguins pulled out the win in a 2-1 shootout win in their last meeting hopefully the Senators can reverse that result and get on a roll with a couple consecutive wins. The lineup will stay the same from last night except Wiercoch will sub out for Benoit. Looks like the Penguins will be without Kris Letang tonight but ya never know, same goes for Matt Niskanen who's been out since game 5 of the season. I love Kyle Turris and I think he has an incredible shot, but I've always noticed he has a really hard time getting his shot off, seems like every second s...

Sens Recap: Borefest

Image
This Sens-Jets game was possibly the most boring game of the season and I watched the WHOLE thing, thats called blogger dedication. Considering we have already played a 1-0 game against the Canes as well as an additional boring 2-1 game against the Canes, the fact that this was the MOST boring game is quite a feat. No hitting, 1 goal, no good scoring chances for either team, no amazing saves, no fights, boring, boring, boring. Aside from the boring aspect the Senators turned the puck over in recurring and comical fashion including a perfect tape-to-tape pass from Condra to Blake Wheeler during a breakout, and a Karlsson giveaway that lead to the games only goal. Nobody looked good in the game and for the most part nobody was noticeable. Shitty all around. All i have to say.

Before the Puck Drop: Candy Canes @ Senators

Image
These two losers and their weird mouths will play against our Senators tonight. Hopefully we can score a goal this time, thankfully Cam Ward is starting tonight instead of Dan Ellis (those words have never been uttered in the history of the internet). Mike Lundin will make his Sens debut tonight after returning from a broken hand. Lucky us! Wiercoch and Borowiecki will both sit in favour of Andre Benoit. Slightly surprising choice by Maclean there, less so in the sense of their comparative play but because Benoit has the lowest future potential of the 3. So for a rebuilding team you are more likely to see the young talent get their shot than a 29 year old rookie. But who am I? just some loser I guess. I would write more and give some more insight but the Hurricanes are super uninteresting to write about. More to add? Comment!

Sens Recap: Back in the Win Column

Image
The Sens pulled off a 4-3 win over the Sabres last night however the score doesn't tell the whole story as the Senators outplayed the Sabres for most if not all of the game. The Senators regained their offensive touch with 4 goals on the night thanks to Erik Karlsson (as always), Chris Phillips, Alfie and Chris Neil who had the winner. Mika Zibanejad played really well again, and his line with Turris and Alfredsson looked great all night. Zbad played an agressive forecheck and allowed Turris and Alfredsson to focus on creating the offense as trailers in the play, as seen on the Alfredsson goal. Zibanejad looked great on that shift and showed some soft hands on a pass to Alfredsson in the slot. The Stephane Da Costa experiement wasn't amazing as he saw limited ice time, but he did not look like he was playing safe at all as he was actively trying to create offense when he did get on the ice, you can just tell he has tons of skill. One positive with the Da Costa thing was t...

Before the Puck Drop: Buffaslugs @ Senators

Image
Tonight, Paris, France native and living bobble head Stephane Da Costa will draw into the lineup to try and spark some offense for the Senators. Zach Smith will get first shot at the second line center spot but if he can't create chances early I expect to see Da Costa slide up the depth chart. Zibanejad will get a chance on the top line with Turris and Alfie, I think thats a good line because it spreads out the Senators offensive players (like all 3/4 of them) and gives Zbad a shot to learn from Alfredsson. Gonchar is back after missing a game with the flu, The Tenderness is still out with "whiplash" (code word for being fat). The key to the game tonight will be stopping the Vanek, Hodgson and Pominville line who are on fire. If we can't the Sens have no shot. On a side note I think its hilarious that the Canucks said they artificially increased Hodgson's stats to make him more tradeable. Thats such a load of crap and an excuse for making a bad trade. 9/10 G...

Oh the Horror!

Image
Look on as Jakob Silfverberg brutally beats Carey Price, preventing him from being able to make a save on an Andre Benoit point shot. This gutless play is in the class of Milan Lucic running over Ryan MIller last season, clearly.

So How'd We Do?

Image
No Spezza, No Offense. At least for last night. The Senators couldn't muster a goal in a 1-0 loss to the Staals  Hurricanes. Didn't see the game myself but heard that the Senators looked tired which is to be expected on a busy 4 game week, on the road, with the flu going around (The Tenderness misted the game with the flu). Couple interesting things I noticed. Firstly, Craig Anderson continues to play lights out. He has a ridiculous .967 save percentage which is about as insane as Thomas Vanek's point titles so far. Obviously I don't see him maintaining this this pace all yar, but if he can play well like this all year it will make losing Spezza that much easier on the team. Second thing I noticed, aside from the top line of Alfredsson, Turris and Michalek all of the Senators forwards played between 12 and 13 minutes. Not entirely sure what to make of this but it seems that either Paul Maclean has a ton of confidence in his forward depth, or that he has no idea wh...

Well this sucks

Image
A day after a convincing win against a streaking Habs team the senators got some bad news. Wait a sec I didnt build that up enough. WE'RE SCREWED! Jason Spezza re-aggravated his old man back and will be out "indefinetly" and by "indefinetly" I mean MINIMUM 2 whole months and probably the whole regular season. This Sens squad is barely a playoff team WITH Spezza, without him....yikes. Could be a rough ride. I think Kyle Turris has played great so far this year but a numero uno centreman in the the NHL? thats a stretch. I think he needs Spezza on the ice to draw some of the defenses attention away from himself. And after Turris....well it looks like we'll be trying to convince ourselves that Peter Regin is a top 6 forward again. Other options? well considering Zibanejad played the least of any player last night I'de say thats not an option Paul Maclean will look into. We could try calling up Stephane "Tiny Head" Da Costa if you like 5 point...

Sens Recap: Sens 3 Caps 2

Image
It certainly looked like everyone on the Senators had Alfies flu last night (except for Craig Andreson). Terrible hockey played by the Sens, saved by solid goaltending and a bounce back 3rd period. The Caps jumped out to a 1st period 2 goal lead however the Senators were lucky to not be down by 5. The Sens looked slow and unorganized in their own end and were regularly caught on long shifts. Anderson kept them in the game and then late in the second an energized Mika Zibanejad and birthday boy Jim "The Irish Wonder" O'Brien helped the Sens get back into the hockey game. Michalek would add a softie early in the 3rd and from that point on the Sens took control of the game eventually getting a winner from Gonchar (credit to Karlsson on the goal for doing all the work). I honestly did not think the team would be this awful without Jason Spezza in the lineup. But for Paul Maclean's possession game it helps to win faceoffs so that you can start the play with the puck ra...

Before the Puck Drop: Capitals @ Sens

Image
The Sens will try to get back on track tonight after a couple of sloppy efforts against the Lightning and Penguins. Craig Anderson will get the start, he has yet to give up more than 1 goal in a game this season . The condensed schedule has already started to take a toll on the Senators as they missed Latendresse for a game followed by Alfredsson missing the last game with the flu.Today on the injury carousel is Jason Spezza who is dealing with an undisclosed injury. That means sens fans will get their first look this season at first-round pick Mika Zibanejad who is finally healthy after missing large chunks of the AHL season with flu like symptons, wisdom teeth issues and possible concussion problems. Hes been playing very well recently for Binghamton so I expect to see him centering the second line. Should be a good game as Washington looks to build off of their first win of the season and the Senators look to bounce back after a close game against the Penguins. Look for Ovechk...
