Angry Armchair GMs

Welcome to a new segment of the Angry Hockey Fan network. In Angry Armchair GMs we will take a look at some intriguing situations around the league and try to put ourselves in a GMs shoes, trying to create trades, sign free agents and so on. Think of it as career mode for NHL 13 only not a video game.

1. The Avalanche cannot get Ryan O'Reilly to sign a contract with them and are apparently listening to trade offers for him. Does it make sens for your team to pursue him? If yes, who would you give up to get him? Keep in mind that the Avalanche are looking for a roster player and a good prospect.

AngryHabsFan

Not a chance in the world.  Our team just got finished dealing with a big contractual distraction and we do not need another Pre-Madonna asking for millions of dollars; either now, or down the road.  Obviously a guy like O'Reilly is in it for the $$$, if he actually cared about his team he would have signed a contract by now.  The difference between Colorado and Montreal is that we have a solid GM who laid the law down on Subban early in their contract talks.  In summary, wouldn't touch the guy, too much baggage.

AngryCanucksFan

No it does not make any sense for our team to go after o'reilly at this time although we do have a couple of key players out with injury. We have enough depth in our lineup that I am certain that we will be able to push throughout this shortened season without adding any more players to our roster. If we traded right now with Colorado we would be possibly losing a great player out of our lineup for a possibly prospect and we cannot afford to lose anyone else that makes our team a whole.  I just cannot see Ryan fitting in with our roster at this time.

The Senators are in major need for a top line centre with the injury to Jason Spezza. O'Reilly is a great player but looking past this season with a healthy Spezza and an improving Kyle Turris it really doesnt make sense to bring in this type of player. I also don't want to mortgage our future to be better this year since our season seems pretty much over at this point, Thanks a lot Matt Cooke.

2. Corey Perry is UFA at the end of the year. Do you want your team to trade for him at the deadline with the risk that he could walk on July 1st or wait until free agency and try to sign him then? What do you think it will take to land Perry in a trade?

AngryHabsFan

I don't think Perry is good enough to lock up for a few months, and then have him walk off into the sunset.  He's definitely not a superstar, but we would have to give up a lot to get Perry in the short term, and overall he's just not worth it.  We basically have no one with a contact up at the end of this year, so cap space this summer is going to be a bit of a problem to work with.  Who would the Ducks even take from us for a guy like Perry?  Pacioretty comes to mind, but he needs to step his game up if he's going to be trade bait.  I just don't think our team is capable of picking up a guy like Perry right now.

AngryCanucksFan

Right now at this place in time I do not think that this would be a wise decision for our franchise.  We already have enough talent in our lineup with the Sedin twins also burrows, and Kesler when he returns from injury which should be within the next few games.  It would be extremely stupid to try and trade for perry at this point when his contract will seen be up, we could give up good players for only getting a player for a few months in return. If anything we could try and sign him at the end of the year but I don't believe we have enough cap room in our budget unless we dump a huge contract like Luongo.  Which brings me to the next answer the person who I would believe that we would have to trade to get perry would be Roberto Luongo, which may not be the contract the ducks are looking for at this point in time.

I would love to add Corey Perry to our lineup, I think he is an elite player in the league, he can create offense, he's big, he draws penalties and he plays with an edge. With Spezza out its become clear that Milan Michalek is a finisher not a creator. He has struggled without an elite playmaker getting him the puck in open areas. Perry is capable of creating his own scoring opportunities.  I consider Ottawa to have only 4 true top 6 forwards in Spezza Micahlek, Turris and Alfie. Alfie only has 1 year max left in him, So that would leave us with 3. I think we need to bring in Perry to give us another option offensively past Spezza. The risk of him leaving in the summer is too great to try bringing him in at the deadline but I would trade a 3rd rd pick for his negotiation rights before July 1st to try and land him. Remember the Senators were deep in the Rick Nash negotiations this summer so there s evidence that they are trying to bring in another elite playmaker.

3. What do the Canucks do with Luongo? Trade him now, at the deadline, in the summer or keep him for the foreseeable future?

AngryHabsFan

Look, Luongo is going to get traded eventually, it's guaranteed.  Can Schiender handle a starting role in a Canadian market?  Probably not, but time will tell.  Bold prediction from me is that Luongo is gone from Vancouver by spring and Schiender is gone within the next four years after he flounders from the pressure. Both goalies are having great success right now but they also play on an amazing hockey team.  Stick either of them in net for the Blue Jackets and then what happens?  I really do not think either goalie is that great, and more time is going to end up revealing a lot about these two.

AngryCanucksFan
It is hard to say what we do with Luongo at this point in time with how he has been playing. One we could trade him now seeing as he is playing well and is probably more valuable in the market. Two we could keep him till at least the off season then trade. Or three we keep him for the future and decide what to do with him then, but don't get me wrong we are open for discussion on any possible trade that arises that would be in our best interest to take.  I would feel comfortable trading Luongo if Shnieder can fill the void that would be left in a Luongo trade and there is also a problem of what if Cory gets hurt then what kind of caliber player do we have for a backup.

AngrySensFan

I don't see the Canucks trading Luongo until Schneider can prove that he is a starting goaltender in the NHL. Whether that happens this year or next remains to be seen. I agree with AngryHabsFan in that I don't think either goalies are "elite" by any means. One exception I foresee is if some situation happens in Florida where Theodore AND Markstrom get injured and they are desperate enough to up their offer on Luongo in order to land him. Otherwise Luongo stays put for a while longer.
